The 10 Commandments of Golf

Golf’s Ten Commandments
1. Thou shall have no favorite game before me.
2. Don’t carve any image into the fairway or green with your golf cart.
3. You will not be given a nickname in vain.
4. Remember to play on the Sabbath day and any other day possible, just not by yourself because that just sucks.
5. When you have the honor, tee it high and let it fly.
6. You shall not murder your playing opponent, just the ball.
7. You shall not commit adultery by playing softball.
8. Thou shall only steal the flag after a hole in one is made.
9. You shall not bear false witness on your scorecard.
10. You shall not covet thy neighbor’s Driver, Wedge, Iron Set, Putter or Shark Attack Golf Gear.

What is Shark Attack Golf?

The question is perhaps not unlike the Matrix. “Neo: What is the Matrix?
Trinity: The answer is out there, Neo, and it's looking for you, and it will find you if you want it to. “Golf is above all, a game. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in matches and bets and become frustrated in our lack of improvement. The players that do improve often consider themselves above playing with lesser players for fear of hurting their own game. If you are lucky enough, practice enough or just gifted enough to become a scratch golfer by all means, play by the rules and challenge the best players possible. If however, you are an average golfer without the financial blessings to belong to or live at a golf course the most important thing is to enjoy the game and to have fun. Why on earth would a person that doesn’t even have a handicap put themselves through the stress of playing the rules down and dirty? Shark Attack golf is many things and is diverse. We watch the pros play on the PGA and LPGA tour’s and they find par 4’s that can be driven with their average distance tee ball and they can almost always go for a par 5 in two and get there. They also play fairways that are as well maintained as our typical putting greens. We encourage players to play from a tee box that will give them a similar experience. The fact is, the average drive in amateur golf is less than 250 yards and can be as low as 200 yards. Our games do not translate to playing courses from the tips. In addition to suggesting shorter tee boxes, we have devised some Shark Attack Rules as well. Driver Only Hole or D.O.H. means that on a dedicated par 4, all players must use only their driver from tee to green until the ball is holed. This one rule can change the direction of an entire match on one hole and gives everyone an equal playing field. We find that most “better” golfers refuse to play this rule. Another rule is that on a designated par 5, we allow all golfers to tee up their second shot. This allows almost everyone to reach in 2. A term that you will often hear if you are playing by Shark Attack Rules is “par or 8”. If your opponent is putting for a bogey or worse from more than 10 feet, you can call par or 8…meaning that if the putt is holed, the player receives a par but if missed, they must take an 8. This rule can only be called once per round per player.
Shark Attack Golf also is a sponsor and big fan of Long Driving. We are not able to provide full financial sponsorships yet but we do provide some Long Drive gear with an edge. All we ask is that the sponsored golfers say that they play for Shark Attack Golf and of course, they should represent the sponsors of their clubs and golf equipment first. Shark Attack Golf, Long Drive Academy will work with local golfers and support their quest to improve and compete on a local and National level. We often interview Long Drivers and have them give a shout out to Shark Attack Golf.
Social Networking is a big part of Shark Attack Golf. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, blogging and a future website is our way of reaching a broader audience and promoting the sport. We often poke fun at each other and try to capture goofy and aggressive golf shots on camera. We also perform golf equipment reviews even though we don’t receive free equipment like much larger and well funded groups. You can rest assured that all of our reviews are honest and not bought and paid for. One of our members did receive an amateur sponsorship by Dixon Golf and for that, we are grateful. Dixon makes earth friendly golf balls that can be recycled and hats made from recycled water bottles.
You can earn the right to be a Shark Attack Playa. Typically, we give golf gear when someone is successful at hitting a heroic or amazingly difficult golf shot. A proven Long Driver can also receive golf gear. There have to be witnesses to the great golf shot as well. You may also post a video and tell us why you deserve golf gear and why you are a Shark Attack Golfer. If all else fails, you can also buy our gear.
Music is near to the heart of Shark Attack Golf. We have been called the mosh pit of golf. We encourage golfers to have theme music for their tee shot. In order to claim the theme music as yours, you must post a video on one of our sites showing you teeing off with the theme music. You can look at our YouTube Channel for examples. Shark Attack does review music for some groups. There is an official review posted on our blog page at www.sharkattackgolf.blogspot.com . If you haven’t already done so, explore Shark Attack Golf through the links below and see if you find a place to fit in. We are anti snob golf and we stand for the average golfer. We offer respect for the course and we encourage golf to be made more accessible to and more fun for everyone. Feel free to add your thoughts and ideas to Shark Attack Golf as it is an ongoing journey.

MECHANIZATION- KENOSIS AS REVIEWED BY SHARK ATTACK GOLF

Out of a cold, dark mist, a metal ship emerges. The sounds of aggression rise and attack your eardrums. Shark Attack Golf knows edgy and metal and we’ve been called the mosh pit of Golf. We recently received a copy of the newest release by Mechanization. These tracts are powerful and each has a unique drive. The opening blast comes in an effort called Approaching the Spectre’s Emblem and you feel that a battle is about to erupt in a land of Vikings. Mechanization does have a mechanical or industrial base in its music, especially the drum side but unlike some robotic sounding bands, the sound simply comes across as tight and clean with the real darkness being produced by the guitar and vocals. The band has many influences and the sound is symbolic of a clash between Amon Amarth and Cannibal Corpse but with more melodic vocals. The work put into this project is obvious and the usual slacking of some tracts is pleasantly absent. The flow of music is hard, full of energy and a natural progression. I also like the directional changes that the band makes from song to song and often within the song. Overall, a great mix of heavy and melodic without being boxed into a mold that so often haunts the metal genre. I felt a connection with several tracts and I would not hesitate to release them in any chosen order. This album is well worth the purchase and Shark Attack Golf rates it an 8 out of 10 shark teeth scale. Hopefully, you will hear much more from Mechanization as their music may be featured in some of our future video creations.

The Rusty Spoon Club

The Rusty Spoon Club

Unlike most golfers with lower handicaps, I was not born with a silver spoon in my house, let alone in my mouth. I am fairly new to the game of golf, only playing consistently for the past 10 years or so and I am in my 40’s. I love this game and yet there are many problems in it. It remains a very expensive game and is still an exclusive club to join. I recently heard an announcer for a major network say that most golfers on tour were from humble beginnings. I would have to cry foul on that statement. In my opinion, you simply can’t achieve greatness in golf without lots of advantages. The advantages include a family with monetary means to either be a member of a private course or to live on a course and have easy and constant access to the range and the course. A kid playing seldom with a parent as money or time permits can never compete with a kid hitting balls on a daily basis. Many courses continue to have an elite attitude and the young are not typically welcomed or encouraged to play. The attitude also extends to players who might not look the part. I have been asked to tuck my shirt in on more than one occasion even though it had a collar. I’m not a backwoods redneck who wants to show up in a torn t-shirt or blue jeans but we have to stop the high brow rich club mentality or there will be no future to look forward to.
Another giant sticking point, in my opinion, is that the face of golf is very white and male. Tune into any broadcast and the announcers will be almost exclusively male and almost 100% white. I’m sorry but you just can’t tell me that there are no African American, Asian or Hispanic announcers who are qualified to call this great game. We don’t need written criteria on the matter but until the game can reflect a more balanced pulpit, it can never start to shake the racist image that it holds. We also need to keep politics out of the game. Look, we get it, most of the powers in golf are conservative and wealthy but we don’t need further proof being presented in the form of on air political opinion. I’m not a conservative person but I also don’t want a Liberal bias being pushed in golf by the personalities. Sports and Church should be political free zones and that’s all I’m going to say.
The Golf Channel, the PGA and others are always asking how we can grow the game. I have some ideas and along with some friends, we are working hard to make the game better and fun again. The clothing is one place to start. We should encourage a wide range of expression in the attire worn. Watching a bunch if clones in matching or similar outfits is boring and yet, when someone on tour shows up with a non-traditional pair of shoes, a flat brim hat or some aggressive colors or images on their shirt, the announcers are quick to judge and make fun of it. Also, if a player dares to have hair that creeps out from under their hat, the old boy club acts as if the game has been invaded by hippies. I also believe that amateurs should be encouraged to play tee boxes that are in line with their skill level. What sense does it make for us to watch the pros be able to drive some greens on par 4’s and go for most par 5’s in two but then we go to the course and play the back tee boxes and never have a chance to drive a green or reach a par 5 with a chance for an eagle? We have chosen to alter some rules for fun. We call our system Shark Attack Rules. We have a designated hole called DOH…Driver Only Hole. This hole is typically a par 4 and the golfer must use driver only from tee to green and even putting. Another rule is that on one par 5, we allow the golfer to tee up their second shot. Imagine grinding on a par 4, setting up to put from 20 feet for a 6 when you’re playing partners yells par or 8. If you make the putt, you get a par but if you miss, it’s an 8. I’ve played in money matches and I’ve played in National tournaments under PGA rules and I am just tired of the old, boring golf standards that we live under. It seems that the better a golfer is, the less fun they are to play with. If you are bored with the old game, are an aggressive golfer or just want to help us make the game more fun and accessible to everyone, feel free to join our effort at Shark Attack Golf. We have a facebook page, a YouTube Channel and a blog and a website will follow soon.

Reflections of Augusta 2011

This was my first trip to the Masters and I had always assumed that the hype surrounding the battle for the Green Jacket was well overrated. Boy was I wrong. Words could never do justice but here is a quick list of my observations.

Accessible- Although this is one of the hardest tickets to obtain, access to the site and from parking to walking in the gates is a breeze.

Smells- As you enter the sacred grounds, the aroma of fresh cut grass is overwhelming. Scents of fertilizer, pine needles and spring blooms enter the nose and almost take your breath away.

Expensive and Cheap- The merchandise is where the money is made and nothing to take home is cheap however, the expense is almost justified by the ability to check your purchased items for free instead of returning to the car or carrying your purchases all day. Food and drink are cheap. While all other sporting events take full advantage of the ability to serve bad food and average drinks at extremely high prices, the Masters has made an effort to offer quality and unique foods at unbelievably low prices. BBQ sandwich for $2.50, egg salad, pimento cheese and turkey sandwiches at $1.50 and chips and crackers at $1.00. The featured item in the chicken sandwich, a cold, fried chicken breast on a bun and very good also priced at $2.50. A person can spend less for 2 onsite meals than for 1 cheap meal while traveling to or from the venue.

Bunkers of Brutality and rolling Fairways- The television simply do not do the bunkers justice. The bunkers are large enough to hide an elephant in and the fairways are full of contours that can hinder the best struck fairway drive.

Earth shaking Roars- Tiger was on the march and when he made an eagle on number 8, a roar came through the course and seemed to shake the very ground that we stood on. I've always heard of the roars and I assumed that there was no way that these cheers could be different than others but pleasantly, I experienced firsthand the difference and I will never be the same because of it.

The Players- Tiger was on his game and appears to be close to winning form but I have to say that I was uninspired because of his stride and intentional mind games that he seems to try and impose upon other players. The outfits once meant to intimidate foes have become much staler in relation to the younger players and the more aggressive gear that they sport. Also, Tiger takes a very slow and deliberate pace that lags behind the others in his group. Phil was upbeat and gave off an air of friendly and personable. He had an old school stride and appeared to be much thinner than on television. We yelled for him and seemed to appreciate the support. Phil has become more modern in his golf attire than Tiger at this point. Dustin Johnson- This was the most imposing figure in my mind. He is big and lanky and appears to reach down and sling the golf ball down the fairway. Ricky Fowler- By far the best dressed with his Puma gear and he had some family or friends walking among us and I was really impressed when he took time to walk over and greet and hug them in front of everyone. Sergio Garcia- The most disappointing player based on his poor play and his hanging his head in response. He does not seem to be having fun or enjoying his time on the course at this point. Luke Donald- Small and deliberate and very preppy in his attire. The approach shot he hit into the 18th green might be the greatest shot I've ever witnessed. His drive was very close to the fairway bunker and he had a funky stance that was half in the bunker. He backed off the shot 3 times because of the stance and 1 time because of a roar from a birdie at Amen Corner. He proceeded to hit a pure mid iron that barely cleared the bunker at the green and then beamed the flag before reversing off the front of the green. Fittingly, he went on to chip that one in. Angel Cabrera- A large and jolly player and eager to play his shot. He stepped up on 18 and hit the approach shot during a crowd roar. All the Asian Players- Respectful of the game, disciplined in their swings and surprisingly long for their size. The crowd appreciated their love of the game and their determination. Bubba Watson- Wild Thing would describe his approach to the game. Hell-bent on flying every bunker possible and destroying par 5's. He flew a drive an estimated 340 yards on the 18th and found the lip of the bunker. Another 6 inches and he would have carried the bunker. A non standard swing but power to burn. Non Competitive Spotter- The first player was paired with what I assume is a member of the course and the member played alongside this golfer. The pressure seemed to be pretty great as the spotter found himself gripping the club an inordinate amount of times. Judge Smails would be proud. Charl Schwartzel- An excellent player, proving once again that Augusta is a South African friendly retreat. He seems to be a solid player and a gentlemen and anyone that can birdie the last 4 holes on that stage under that pressure, deserves to win. Adam Scott- We assumed that he had the tournament won until we figured out who the roars were for. He is another tall and lanky player and seems very confident at times. I know I'm leaving some big names out but these are the players that made an impression on me.

Mental Game- They say golf is a mental game and never was this proven to be truer than on Sunday at the Masters. I was so involved in the game and so caught up in the unfolding drama that I felt like I had spent the day playing golf and not just watching it.

The Golf Gods- As the unseen forces up in the great fairway in the sky look down, they must find pleasure in knowing that such a simple yet plush venue can inspire such fierce competition and emotions among the players and fans.

A Comparison- I have been blessed to play in a National Golf Tournament at Pinehurst and although that was a memorable experience, the two courses could not be more different. Both are dear to me and both are special in their own way. Pinehurst has many courses but No. 2 is a monument to a past time of tabletop greens and strategy and Augusta is a traditional yet changed course that only a chosen few ever get to play. I heard an interview with a writer for a Golf magazine and he stated that he decided to sit out his chance to play Augusta on the Monday after the Masters. He said he had played it a few times and just took a pass this year. This is a man who has lost an appreciation of what this Great Game.

Baffled- I don't care what anyone says, the equipment that the players use is not the same as what we, amateurs have access to. The biggest example I can give is the Drivers used. We watched several tee shots and without exception, they all had the same sound. All of the big sticks had a low thud or dull click sound. Taylormade, Adams, Titleist and Cleveland all sounded the same.

No Clue- One weird aspect was the amount of fans onsite that have no clue about the game. We found ourselves doing commentary and calling the game for the players coming down the 18th hole. We had to add so much commentary that we got briefly scolded by a caddy.

In all, we left the grounds being awestruck by the experience and feeling more than ever a new dedication to the Game and a renewed commitment to practice and improve our own skill levels. Surviving for 8 hours without a cell phone was hard to conceive but proved to add to the experience and provided a time machine effect of remembering life without constant and instant contact.
